Let’s start from the beginning.
You’re here because you need a writer. You want to be noticed, recognized. You’ve got something to say to the world and you need a little help. Or perhaps you’ve got a great idea on how to get your message out there but need someone to craft its content.
Maybe you want to revamp that newsletter to better reflect your company’s culture and personality. Maybe it’s finally time to rewrite those executive bios on your website. Maybe you want to publish an e-book for your clients to download and just don’t have the time to flesh it out and get it done. Maybe you’re someone who wants a personal history documented for your future autobiography.
That’s where I come in.
Good writing and a strong message will bring you visibility and enhance your expertise in your market. Visibility brings a greater reach and a greater reach brings a wider following with more prospective clients coming your way. And who doesn’t want more clients?
There are a gazillion copywriters, content generators and buzzword guzzlers out on the market today. So why should you choose Rhino Girl Media?
Because I’m cool. I’m friendly. I’m dependable. And my response time is off the charts. Plus, well, I’m fun and I’ve got style.
And, by the way, I’m super humble.
OK for real. I’ll tell you why:
1. I’m versatile and can write what you need, want and desire – I’m a journalist and writer at heart. In my 16 years of being published, I’ve covered art, film, music, municipal government, technology, business, social media and the accounting profession. I’ve covered events of national associations, software conferences, elections, art openings, school board meetings and fires. I’ve also been published for opinion writing, profiles, interviews, features and breaking news. This means I can adjust my writing skills to the style and format of what you want.
2. I want to get to know you. Yes, really. I recognize that your message is special. Whether you need that staff bio, executive profile, or a series of blog posts written, what you have to say and how you say it is important and needs to reflect your voice and values. I will ask you a series of questions to make sure I know you and your company enough to do this successfully.
3. I’m dependable and accessible – I will answer your calls and emails as soon as I can (usually within 48 hours). I communicate and won’t leave you hanging. We will have a project timeline and you will be kept up to date on how things are developing. Urgent deadline? No problem, I happen to thrive on them.
4. I have heart and will illustrate yours through my words – I love writing about people and their motivation(s). I get my thrills from unearthing the gems in stories. I want you to feel well-represented, respected and cared for during this process of bringing your world to the rest of the world. If something doesn’t feel right, I want you to tell me so it does.
5. I will make the process painless – Yes, you read right. Painless. Come equipped with a concept of what you want and I’ll transform your ideas into copy you can use, spread and enjoy.
Here’s a little bit more about me and how I started Rhino Girl Media:
I spent my first 30 years in Maine, aside from a six-month stint in Texas, where I was an intern for the alternative weekly newspaper, The Austin Chronicle. In 2006, I packed up the U-haul, quit my two jobs as an editor of a community weekly in Kennebunkport and a sushi slinger at a Japanese restaurant and hightailed it to New York – the place I always wanted to be and where I have roots.
When I got here, I became an editor at a national B2B publication in the Financial District covering public accounting. It was a far cry from the community reporting I was used to – but I adapted to my new beat. I wrote about the business practices of a profession that was facing major demographic shifts, constantly evolving technologies and globalization. I co-founded a blog focused on young accountants, and wrote about cutting edge growth strategies, hip managers who kept their employees (of all ages) engaged and how the workplace was transforming into today’s virtual, flexible, and digital environment. It earned a spot among the Top 50 Blogs for Accountants.
[You can see some of my clips here.]
Prior to my arrival in New York, I worked first as a reporter and then editor, at a family of community newspapers in southern Maine. I also worked at a nonprofit gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender youth advocacy organization teaching marginalized young adults about leadership and activism through the Ford Foundation’s Youth Leadership & Development Initiative.
[Check out a newsletter I edited for the project here.] Later, I was awarded a Communications Fellowship through the Gill Foundation to develop the organization’s brand and marketing initiative.
At the University of Maine, while earning my degree in Sociology, I created and published a 68-page feminist magazine. It drew a bit of heat on campus because it was new and different, but mainly it was recognized for connecting women and the resources available to them. I’d provide a link, but I am topless on the cover.
I tend to gravitate toward the underdog and the underground -but have often been called a chameleon as I can fit and thrive in many different arenas.
I founded Rhino Girl Media in January 2011 when I couldn’t take the corporate lifestyle anymore. After 49 months working as that B2B editor, I had enough. My salary was cut, my benefits slashed and though I had made some friends around me in the cube, complacency crept in and my passion for writing was greatly impacted. Not to mention, when my only other female colleague left for another job, I found myself facing the ‘ol boy’s club mentality. Not one to describe myself as politically correct, I just couldn’t get down with the old school (and sometimes wildly inappropriate) fraternizing that went on in conference rooms.
So I started my own business. And here we are.
Rhino Girl Media is a mobile and bicoastal company and when I’m not at my home base in Brooklyn, I am in the other Portland over on the West Coast in Oregon where my partner lives. I do long distance and remote relating well. Ask me about it!
